Best Running GPS Watch Reviews & News

Welcome To Running GPS Watch, Read On!

If you're here, then you're no doubt looking for news and info about Running GPS Watches, that's pretty obvious.  I'm a Garmin Forerunner 205/305 user myself and I use my GPS watch primarily for trail running in Thailand and when I'm traveling around in new places.  I use it to record trails, research them and then set markers for when I'm "setting a hash" which involves re-creating a trail for other people to follow, so I make a lot of use of my Garmin Fore runners both to keep an eye on my running, check where I've been and to do pathfinding - it's a pretty wide range of use that gives me a good environment to test the functionality of any GPS Watch.

In my time, I've tried:

While I'm not the world's leading expert, I know what I like and don't like about them.  I interact with a lot of friends who use GPS watches as well for similar reasons, so I get a pretty good cross-section of what's out there and how well it works.

My goal here is to share tips, tricks and reviews about the various Running GPS Watches that I use that might be of help to some of you out there!  Not a bunch of scribbly garbage written by paid writers somewhere in India, but actual articles written by a guy who uses a Running GPS Watch almost every day - everywhere from Bangkok and Manila and Phnom Penh to San Francisco, Houston, Washington DC and more.  Hopefully some of this info will be useful.  For example, if you're just getting a GPS Watch and you don't yet know how to transfer coordinates between Google Earth and your GPS in Windows, my guide on that might be helpful.

I also keep an eye on the best Running GPS Watch prices and try to link to them.  Of course the main links lead to Amazon and credit my account with a referral, but I don't feel like that's a conflict of interest - I'm pretty straightforward in my reviews and opinions and don't write a bunch of flowery garbage just to sell more Garmin Forerunners or any other kind of products!  I certainly hope you find some of this price info helpful as well :)

So, with all that said, read on for more content and if there's something you don't see here that you're interested in, just drop me a line at gpsguy@runninggpswatch.com!

Watches With Heart Rate Monitors (Non-GPS)

I take a look at some of the options out there for those who need to monitor their heart rate while they train, but don't want to (or need to) make the investment in a fully functional GPS watch.  There are some important things to think about in this category and I spend a little time up front on what to look out for from cheaper vendors selling supposed "heart rate monitoring watches" for $25.  Afterward, I cover the three best-selling non-GPS watches with heart rate monitors!

Tracks & Waypoints To & From Google Earth on Windows

One of the problems with the software that comes with the Garmin Forerunner is the limited way it handles waypoints and tracks - especially for those of us Windows Garmin Forerunner users who like to plot our paths on Google Earth on Windows. This is what makes the Garmin Forerunner 305 and Garmin Forerunner 205 the perfect mate for the job - if you use the right tools!

Tracks & Waypoints To & From Google Earth on Apple OSX

Google Earth & Garmin's software (probably many others) have the same limitations on OSX that they do on Windows - they're a bit of a one way street.  For those of us who want to put coordinates and tracks back into our devices for use in pathfinding and setting trails, HoudahGPS and Google Earth provide a very quick and easy solution!
